A tradition of hospitality
Sharing tea and scones in the garden has been part of the welcome at The Elms for more than half a century. In the late 1960s, Gertrude Maxwell began serving afternoon tea to visitors at the end of their guided tours. Tables and chairs were arranged in the Tea Garden near the last remaining elm on the north lawn, and her husband Duff installed an electric bell so guests could ring for service. Gertrude would take their orders and serve freshly baked scones with tea in delicate white china cups.
Our Devonshire Teas continue that spirit of hospitality, offering groups the opportunity to enjoy refreshments, conversation and the peaceful surroundings of one of Tauranga’s most significant heritage places.

Combine your refreshments with a guided tour of the historic House and Library, where our volunteer guides bring the stories of this remarkable place to life.
For groups with a particular interest in the gardens, please ask about including a presentation on their history.
Bookings and availability
Devonshire Teas are available during spring and summer for pre-booked groups of 20 or more people. We require at least one week’s notice, and all bookings are subject to availability.
A gluten-free option is available on request. Please let us know about dietary requirements when making your enquiry so we can discuss what we can accommodate.

Planning your visit
The Elms’ historic grounds include shell and stone paths, grass and uneven surfaces. Access to some areas and buildings may be difficult for visitors using wheelchairs or walking aids. Please discuss any mobility or access requirements with us before booking so we can help plan your visit.
Limited parking is available on Mission Street, with a two-hour time limit. Public parking is also available on Cliff Road.
